Betty (“Betz”) Bonin has been commercially fishing for salmon for over thirty years. She is now a retired commercial fisheries permit holder and captain of a setnet operation on the beach in Naknek, Alaska. She was the first one on the Naknek beach to implement a quality program through the use of slush ice bags and insulated totes, generously provided by Bristol Bay Economic Development Corporation.
Betz has three children-Rhonda, Izetta, and Everett, and seven (yes, seven!) grandchildren. She lives year-round in Naknek, Alaska, where she owns Fireweed Fabrics and travels extensively with her husband during the winter months.
Betz is retired after over 30 years as the Clerk at the Bristol Bay Borough. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, quilting, and cruising around the world. A few years back, Betz narrated and starred in a television commercial talking about her involvement in the Bristol Bay commercial fishing industry over the years. Watch the video below.
